Cotton Used To Entertain His Friend Izaak Walton At His Country House In Dovedale Where He Built The Little Fishing-House Adorned With The Interlaced Monogram Of Their Initials. He Was, As He Said, ‘An Old-Fashioned Country Squire’ Who Played His Full Part In The Life Of The Counties Of Derbyshire And Staffordshire On Whose Borders He Lived; Who Delighted In Fishing The Beautiful River That Flowed Past His Home; And Who There Kept Open House For His Many Friends. In Poems Addressed To Them He Reveals The Tastes Of A Country Gentleman And The Gifts Of A True Poet. PP As A Poet He Was Best Known Until The End Of The Eighteenth Century For His Burlesque On Virgil, But He Also Wrote A Large Number Of Shorter Poems, From Which The Present Selection Has Been Drawn. They Were Collected After His Death, But The Poet’s Son, Beresford Cotton, Rightly Complained Of The Slipshod Edition That Was Printed Without Reference To The Cotton Family. Yet This Has Hitherto Remained The Basis For Any Reprint Of Cotton’s Poems. The Present Editor Has For The First Time Made Use Of A Manuscript Of The Poems Transcribed For Some Of His Derbyshire Friends At The Time When They Were Written. It Is Thus Possible At Last To Present A Text Of Cotton’s Poems As He Wrote Them., Keywords: Cotton, Charles Cotton, Poems, Poetry, English Poetry, Literature, English Literature, 17th Century English Poetry, 17th Century English Literature, CLT00178 Price:
