Book/Dust Jacket Condition

In a book listing we first describe a book by its condition followed by the dust jacket's condition (the latter if applicable or No DJ if none). Sometimes we forget about there being no DJ so a good rule of thumb with us is that if you don't see a DJ described in our listing then we don't have it. We use the terms New, Like New, Very Good (VG), and Good (G), Fair (F), and Poor (P). Examples are VG/VG, a Very Good condition book in a Very Good condition DJ, and VG/G, a Very Good condition book in a Good condition DJ, etc. We will also use + and - as in VG+ and VG- for nuances. New to us means a book that is tight and pristine inside and out. Very rarely will we describe a book as new, even coming out of its original shrinkwrap, because even new books can have minor blemishes/imperfections due to shipping or other causes. These last we might describe as Like New. VG (95% of our books) means a nice to excellent tight clean book with usually some minor imperfections and possibly a manufacturing defect. We are very meticulous in noting book/DJ imperfections/defects. VG books have no highlighting, underlining, pen/pencil notes, marginalia or the like. Such books are Good (G). The only exception we make is that there can be VG Ex Library books with the usual stamps, marks, etc., as long as they are minor. All Ex Library books we sell are clearly described as such at the beginning of a listing. Good (G) books can have the aforementioned highlighting, underlining, notes, etc., and also have more bumping to the corners, rubbing, scuffing, etc. Fair (F) books are worse than Good (G) and Poor (P) worse than Fair. We sell few Fair and Poor books (they have to be very interesting or narrow in their focus or rare or some such) but their condition will be described in full. New DJs are just that, New, no imperfections, excepting perhaps the slightest edgewear. Even very minor imperfections drop them from New to VG++ or lower. VG DJs are nice with the usual light rubbing/scuffing/edgewear and a few other minor imperfections. Good DJs have some/moderate rubbing/scuffing/edgewear and chips/tears, etc.. Fair and Poor more and more. Sometimes DJs are Very Poor but we keep them with their books because they should be with them and we don't charge for them. Please be aware that in condition cases beauty is in the eye of the beholder. We describe our books in great detail and make judgment calls.

Book/DJ Descriptions

99% of the time we describe our books according to the following formula (or near enough to it): Book/DJ Condition, Year/Publisher/Edition/Other Publication Information/Hardback/Paperback, Series, ISBN, Book Cocked?, Corners, Boards/Edges/Spine/Gilt/Lettering, Page Edges, Pastedowns/Flys/Interior, DJ. After that we may include information on maps, plates, foldouts, special sections, etc., as well as some or almost all of the book's contents.

Bargain Books   (See Also Our Bargain Books Page)

Our bargain books will be described but not always in such great detail as our regular books. That being said, even with our bargain descriptions our books will still probably be described better than a lot of other books that you've seen online. If you ever want more information on any of our books please just email us.
