Lawrence: Their Visions of Evil, VIII. Voyage of Oblivion, D. H. Lawrence: A Chronicle of His Life and Works, Index, From Overleafs: In the whole of his work - novels, short stories, essays, travel books, and poems - D. H. Lawrence is revealed as a religious seeker, as a thought-adventurer, as one who, on a voyage of discovery, traveled past the boundaries of established doctrine and found the meaning of religion in vital human experience. The goal of his voyage was the achievement of full awareness of man's role in life. Lawrence's art was inseparable from religion, which he saw as a creative act. Always defending the creative spirit against secular encroachments, he was filled with reverence for the mystery and wonder of the material universe. PP Dr. Panichas's book begins with an appraisal of Lawrence's religious concepts. It then traces his religious development, beginning with his nonconformist Protestant heritage, from which he never quite freed himself. Lawrence was vehement in his reactions to the political, economic, and social catastrophes of his time, for he saw them all as violations of the spirit. He suffered intensely because of the greatest violation - World War I – but with its end he was able to reaffirm the indestructibility of the spirit. Taking themes from the Bible, viz., the Risen Christ and the life of David, Lawrence imbued them with new vigor. He dealt repeatedly with the problem of evil; and he became prophetic in his vision of the future. Because of both these aspects of his work, it may be compared with that of F. M. Dostoevsky. Searching for new realms of consciousness, Lawrence, in his last years, looked beyond life and did some of his greatest work as a poet of death. PP Reflecting a sensitive sympathy of vision that has intuitively grasped the writer's way of looking at things, this study sees Lawrence's religious quest in relation to himself as an artist, to other people, and to God. His quest has significance both positive and cosmic, transcending his concern for the afflictions of his time: dehumanization, industrialism, materialism, ugliness, and war. The author shows us that Lawrence wished for man to return to an older vision of life, a vision which man could behold only by yielding to the religious forces within. PP The author has added a chronological list of Lawrence's work, along with important biographical events. This list will be of interest to students and general readers alike., Keywords: D. H. Lawrence, Consciousness, Religion, Bible, Evil, Dehumanization, Industrialism, Materialism, Ugliness, War, Literature, CLT00292
